The historic Lost River General Store, built in 1898, is located on the grounds of the Inn. There you will find West Virginia products and old-fashioned gifts. It’s also a great spot for lunch. Try the BBQ chicken or baby back ribs. You can also treat yourself to a hand-dipped ice cream cone, a grilled panini sandwich, or a rich cappuccino.

Next to the General Store is Uncommon Things, a shop featuring antiques and folkart from around the world, including many one-of-a-kind items. This is a place you can browse for hours if you like different and unusual things.

For dining, the Lost River Grill is just a mile down the road. Its down-home fare is good and you’ll love the country atmosphere. For something special, there’s the Candlelight Café which serves four-course dinners in an intimate atmosphere. Reservations required (304) 897-5583.

Nature lovers enjoy hiking or horseback riding in Lost River State Park. You can swim and sun at Rockcliff Lake, a spring fed lake located about 15 minutes from the Inn. Fishermen love Trout Pond or Lost River, where trout and small-mouth bass abound. Golfers praise the courses at Bryce Mountain and Moorefield.

A day trip to the South Branch area takes you to Seneca Rocks, one of the most popular climbing spots in the East. Canoeing is available on the South Branch of the Potomac River.

Special Events

In April and May, you can watch eagles nest on the mountain behind the Inn and see the return of such migratory birds as northern orioles, red-breasted grosbeaks, and indigo buntings. The flowering redbud and dogwood are magnificent during this time of year.

In mid-July, the Firemen’s Festival at the community center takes you back in time. You can watch horseshoe throwing and old-fashioned jousting on horseback and enjoy food, rides, music and games.

The last weekend in September is our Heritage Festival. Historic homes and buildings are open to the public. The county celebrates its history through civil war encampments, quilt displays, apple-butter making and other activities.

In October, the foliage begins to turn and the mountains of West Virginia are spectacular. Be sure to book early if you plan to visit anytime during the month of October.
